Understanding your insurance coverage can be confusing and challenging! Here is some information to help make the process a little easier. Every insurance plan is different, so take the time to become familiar with what services are covered under yours. Taking the time to do this before you attend or even schedule the appointment will help to avoid unpleasant surprises.
How Insurance works…
You will pay me prior to or immediately before the session. This money is paid directly from you, the client.
I will provide you a receipt that you have paid in full for your session, the receipt will be complete with all information needed for insurance coverage purposes.
You can submit the receipt to your insurance company and get directly reimbursed from the insurer as per your insurance plan.
Important Information About Insurance Coverage
for Counselling and Psychotherapy
Counselling, psychotherapy, and psychological services are not covered by OHIP. However, you may have coverage for these services under your employee benefits plan. Each insurance plan specifies which types of counselling and psychotherapy are covered based on practitioner credentials and designations.
The insurance plan will typically outline which of the following practitioner designations/credentials are covered by your insurance plan.
These are typically one of the following …
Registered Social Worker
It is important to note I am a Registered Psychotherapist and if your insurance plan covers this designation/credential it will specifically outline this in your benefits details.
If you are unsure or cannot find this information in your plan, I would encourage you to call your benefits provider and ask if Registered Psychotherapist is covered.
Questions to ask your Insurance Provider…
Do I have mental health insurance benefits?
What credentials/designation is covered?
What is my annual deductible and has it been met?
What is the maximum annual amount covered?
What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
Is approval required from my primary care physician?
